To prevent corrosion and odor in sewer systems

Problem

Hydrogen sulfide is formed by bacterial reaction of sulfur-containing compounds in wastewater. This highly toxic and malodorous gas escapes from the wastewater, especially at pumping stations and transitions of pressure lines in free-flow pipes, causing bad odors or health hazards as well as biogenic sulfuric acid corrosion. In the presence of atmospheric oxygen, hydrogen sulfide is oxidized chemically/biologically to elemental sulfur at the sewer walls and then metabolized by microorganisms to sulfate or sulfuric acid. The sulfuric acid leads to corrosion in concrete structures and metal installations, e.g. in waste water pumping stations. The consequence of this is high remediation costs, often already after only a few years of Operation.

Solution

With the GoMet® process, HeGo Biotec GmbH offers a solution to supply the appropriate dosage of treatment chemicals to sewer networks. The GoMet® process includes, in addition to a H2S data logger and a microprocessor-based dosing controller with mobile access, an Internet platform for visualization of measured values and dosing system control and double walled product storage tanks. Inorganic nitrate solutions are preferably used for prevention of odor and corrosion. Through the dosing of nitrates, anoxic environmental conditions are achieved in the waste water, and microbial hydrogen sulfide production is directly prevented.

H2S datalogger

The hydrogen sulfide data logger OCC-910 is a portable measuring device for determining, recording and transmitting the H2S concentration in gases. The design and ATEX conformity allows the use in drainage systems as well as simple area monitoring. The device measures the H2S concentration in gases in adjustable intervals. The data is stored internally and transmitted to the server via GPRS wireless Technology.

Metering controller GoMUC

This metering controller is a stationary process unit for acquiring, recording and transmitting analog and/or digital signals. The outputs are freely configurable and allow both the simple control of metering pumps and the intelligent sensor-based regulation of dosage quantities.

GoMet® metering station

The OCC-920 storage and metering station, which is approved in accordance with to § 19 WHG, consists of a double-walled container with a capacity of 1,000 liters, a lockable metering unit and a removable protective cover. The OCC-920 station is specially designed for outdoor installation for the storage and dosing of chemicals. The delivered unit requires minimal set-up before operation with on-site work limited to only an electrical connection and the installation of the metering pipe.

Summary

By using the GoMet® method, trips to H2S data loggers and metering stations are eliminated, which is particularly advantageous when manpower is limited. With the GoMet® procedure HeGo Biotec GmbH has developed a both economically and ecologically appropriate method for the control of odor and corrosion in sewer Networks.
